[bamboo-plantations] Re: Success propagating B. textilis "Gracilis" by layering

Gigantis Bamboo plantation I've air layered it quite easily while in a pot, I just top the shoots above about the 5th node up, and wait for the branch buds to show bulging or rhizome type growth. I just cut a 4" square pot so that it fits around the branch compliment, and fill with a heavy peat mix soil, I tape the pot shut and wire it in place and water it as you would any plant so that the soil stays moist until I see roots growing out the bottom of the pot. Then I cut the culm and up pot the rooted cutting into a larger pot until it shoots. Usually only the upper most nodes will go, sometimes a lower one will go before an upper, and I have to sacrifice the higher one to cut out the lower one. If one were more meticulous then you could separate the branch from the culm without damaging the culm. This method also works really well on plants in the ground that are having trouble air layering, and is a great way to recover a large plant back into micro propagation by division in smaller pots, as the new rhizomes will be the size of the branch buds.

I live in Hawaii at lower elevation so it's possible to propagate year round.

Good luck,

Lee
