Ecological Housing Contract for
RAAN Indigenous Communities
CO2 Bambu S.A., a Granada-based manufacturer of pre-fabricated guadua bamboo-based low cost housing solutions, was selected on September 28, 2010 to build homes for the indigenous communities of Nicaragua's Atlantic Coast region of RAAN. Funded by Spanish Non Government Organization (NGO) Junta Andalucia, the housing program will provide shelter for 84 families in the four communities of Fruta de Pan, Arenaloso, El Cocal and Ivanwas. The contract is administered by the municipality of Rosita and coordinated with the elected representatives of each participating community. Beyond the construction of eco-homes, CO2 Bambu intends to accelerate the development of a bamboo industry in Nicaragua through technical training of community members across all stages of the bamboo value chain -- from the development of sustainable plantations, harvesting, field immunization, bamboo carpentry and field assembly of prefabricated homes.
