He was saying that I would be better off planting in Costa Rica or Guatemala but I already own a small parcel of land in Ecuador . We just returned from a Bamboo of the Americas (BOTA) eco-tour to
Ecuador. There is plenty of native Guadua angustifolia bamboo there
already. I would suggest you find land that already has it growing or
suitable land to plant with more. There are other species there but
the overall bamboo culture and uses are totally Guadua. In fact
Guadua is being over harvested, and in many cases, mis-managed.
Prices for poles are cheap. Every lumberyard has poles and estarillas.
(split whole culm panels). Dendrocalamus asper was seen a lot too. It
is not as used as Guadua but it is beautiful and huge. Popular as an
ornamental since it is thornless. I also note that Ecuador and
Colombia are perhaps the only 2 countries in the Americas where the
indigenous bamboo culture survived through the European conquest. Be
sure there are pockets of bamboo uses here and there.
In the end know what native species are at hand and proceed with them
first if they are suitable to your project. Expand populations of the
native bamboo to restore habitat and encourage conservation.
