Dear Bamboo-Plantations Group,
My name is Engr. Dante S. Chichioco, a Forest Products Engineer by
profession and is now an instructor on Forest Products Utilization and Wood
Science & Technology. I am currently the Dean of the College of Forestry at
Benguet State University in La Trinidad, Province of Benguet, Philippines.
Am also concurrently the Program Management Officer of the Cordillera Bamboo
Development Program (CORBAMDEV) which is pushing for the development of the
bamboo industry in the highlands of Cordillera of northern Philippines.
Since we have a unique semi-temperate climate in the province of Benguet, a
bamboo partner made a cooperative project with our group to test-propagate
about 30 species of Chinese bamboo in our school. The planting stocks
(rhizome and off-set cuttings) were delivered and planted last May 1, 2008.
Most of these bamboos are of the running type or monopodial in nature.
Specifically, the Phyllostachys varieties from this seedling grant are
mostly intended to be introduced to our highland farmers as an alternative
crop for shoot production. The rest are either ornamentals or for other
bamboo products.
We would appreciate any vital information that you can share related to such
research, Will post other updates from the CORBAMDEV from time to time.
