I am a retired American living in Quezon City for the last year and one
half. For the last 3 years I have been involved with helping people and
families in the Philippines. In honesty, my efforts have met with
marginal success. Recently I have become interested in bamboo as a means
for rural families to help support themselves.
I am currently in the United States for the holidays and will be returning to
Manila the first week of January. I am in the process of completing designs for
a type of modular housing utilizing bamboo. I also want to set up a
facility to treat the bamboo correctly for the houses I plan to build. Upon my
return I am planning an extensive exploration of various areas of the country,
north & south, to find a location where this might prove helpful to the
local community. Finding someone that would let me build a house for them
I am sure will not be a problem, but finding land to build it on and land for
the treatment facility might be.
I was excited to discover that the National Bamboo Development Forum was being
held here in Manila recently, because I desperately need to make contact with
people familiar with the bamboo industries, production and development here in
the Philippines. I did not attend this event because the event was
charging foreigners almost a full 3x times the registration fee being charged
to everyone else. I do not know if this is standard practice in events of
this nature world wide, but in my experience, different forums, educational
seminars and other like events, that I have attended did NOT base the registration
fee on things like race, religion or national origin. Members of an
organization versus non-members or professional affiliation, yes, different
rates for attendance, but not race, religion, or national origin.
May I suggest that when you are setting up your events
you structure your registration and other fees around a system that does not
send a message that they are being singled out for negative prejudiced or other
bias treatment. For moral and ethical
reasons I cannot in good conscious support any organization, event or activity
that engages in such practices.
Please forward to me any information on the events you
are involved with, I would love to bring my family down to participate.
Sincerely,
Richard Robinson

Dear Geoffrey,
Thank you for posting my greetings to your group. Allow me to add the following info to my previous introduction:
- am also a Founding Board of Director and Northern Luzon Coordinator of the Bamboo Network of the Philippines (BambooPhil) , a newly-created group of bamboo experts and enthusiasts in the country
- my school, Benguet State University (BSU), is also an institutional member of BambooPhil
- currently organizing a Regional Bamboo Festival scheduled for the 2nd week of January, 2008 to coincide with the Charter celebration of our school, Benguet State University. This will have the following component activities:
(1) Northern Luzon Regional Bamboo Forum (2-day) - to invite and gather together all bamboo dev't enthusiasts and practioners within the region; this will also be a venue for presentations of best practices in bamboo production, processing and marketing;
(2) Cordillera Bamboo Culture and Arts Festival (week-long) - to showcase use of bamboo in the Cordilleras featuring: (a) songs and dances using bamboo; (b) bamboo art installations; and (c) exhibits of indigenous bamboo instruments and other farms implements; and
(3) Bamboo Market Exchange (month long activity) - to provide market venue for bamboo products from local propagators and manufacturers including exporters; this will be done side-by-side a techno-display of new tools and technologies in bamboo production and processing
(4) 2nd CorBamDev Council General Assembly - to celebrate the anniversary of the Cordillera Bamboo Development Council, we will be inviting all council members to nominate new members of the Bamboo Board of Trustees and review the accomplishments of the group for the year 2008; this will also allow other applicants to become regular members of the Bamboo Council.
A very ambitious schedule of activities for short period of preparation. I believe we can make a good show if we can get the support and participation of other bamboo groups like the academic sector; the local government units; the Dept. of Trade & Industry; DENR; DOST; peoples organizations; non-government org'n and most especially the private sector involved in bamboo production, marketing and processing.
We intend to solicit help from our bamboo partners like: Bamboo Network of the Philippines; Bamboo for Life Program thru Rotary Club & USec Edgardo Manda; the Philippine Bamboo Foundation thru Engr. Romy Sta. Ana; CERC thru Conrad Perreras and Dexter Quintana; the religious sector thru Bishop Cenzon and Fr. Tambic; and the Benguet communities thru Gov. Fongwan and Congressman Dangwa among others.
Please contact us if you have any interest in coming to the Philippines to attend and participate in this worthwhile endeavor. We will also appreciate suggestions and referrals for any funding and technical support for this activities.
Thank you very much and more power to all bamboo advocates!

Dear Bamboo-Plantations Group,
My name is Engr. Dante S. Chichioco, a Forest Products Engineer by profession
and is now an instructor on Forest Products Utilization and Wood Science
& Technology. I am currently the Dean of the College
of Forestry at Benguet
State University
in La Trinidad, Province of Benguet ,
Philippines .
Am also concurrently the Program Management Officer of the Cordillera Bamboo Development
Program (CORBAMDEV) which is pushing for the development of the bamboo
industry in the highlands of Cordillera of northern
Philippines .
Since we have a unique semi-temperate climate in the
province of Benguet ,
a bamboo partner made a cooperative project with our group to test-propagate
about 30 species of Chinese bamboo in our school. The planting stocks
(rhizome and off-set cuttings) were delivered and planted last May 1, 2008.
Most of these bamboos are of the running type or monopodial in nature.
Specifically, the Phyllostachys varieties from this seedling grant are mostly
intended to be introduced to our highland farmers as an alternative crop for
shoot production. The rest are either ornamentals or for other bamboo
products.
We would appreciate any vital information that you can share related to such
research, Will post other updates from the CORBAMDEV from time to time.
Thank you and more power to all BAMBOO ADVOCATES.
