I would like to report that Phyllostachys nigra aka "Black Bamboo" is flowering and losing its vitality, no new shoots this year; (location: on the NW coast of Oregon, US). I remember that Betty Shore of the ABS kept a remarkable listing of "Bamboo Flowering worldwide" 15-20 years ago, Does anyone here know if this list is being continued, or if anyone is keeping track of this strangely timed phenomenon? I have not been active in the ABS for some time due to health issues -- but I do feel the calling -- I have several bamboo projects in the works now.
Every year I enjoy walking my dog Rio past several bamboo groves; one of them is Phyllostachys nigra or Black Bamboo. It has aggressively sent underground rhizomes into the property owners' lawn, which would develop into beautiful new shoots and culms every spring.
I was disappointed this year when no new shoots were to be seen anywhere in the grove. Looking for the cause, I was dismayed to see that it had in fact gone fully into "flowering". Has anyone seen Black Bamboo/
Phyllostachys nigra flowering recently?Thirty some years heretofore; I was saddened by the the flowering of one of the bamboo patches on my riverfront property on the Oregon coast -- the bamboo, a Phyllostachys bambusoides (if I remember correctly. I know that the same species had flowered and died-off at the Japanese Garden in Portland, Oregon and many other locations as well.
I did take some digital pictures and videos with a tablet and a GroPro POV camera.
