[bamboo-plantations] v2. Bamboo and Sociology (clearer)

Gigantis Bamboo plantation

Dear Bambuseros, Bamboo lovers, specialists, scientists, etc,

For many years now, as some of you already know, I have been conducting a study/research project for my Phd as sociologist of Development focusing on the ecology and development in the  bamboo sector, or what I call, "bamboo's space of opinions".

Although my research is going to end very soon,  I would like to have more input from the people who are passionate, involved with, and live "within bamboo" on a daily basis.  For that reason I am calling for interviews.

To better understand who speaks about bamboo, please help me by filling out the attached simple quantitative questionnaire: Sociology Bamboo Questionnaire

To give you an idea of my Phd dissertation thesis, and in order to be transparent,  following are the three areas I explore in my research:

1) Socio-historical: The origin of Development; the link between Development, Colonization and Productivism; the construction of the perception of nature within the creation of Development, the imagination of Development as challenged by ecology.

2) Field study: Bamboo, from global to local space of opinion (the complexity of actors); Bamboo; Real bamboo and Symbolic bamboo; Bamboo, a representation of socio-economic heterogeneity; Bamboo and Development(s): an oxymoron ; Bamboo and social economy (example of Martinique); the perception of bamboo from diverse areas.

3) Developement and the ecological challenge: From Development to Post-Development; Ideology and Utopia: their influence on our perceptions; global village and local village, the age of network; the eco-village as a choice for development ? ; the community as a choice of post-development and ecological action ? ; between green capitalism and green socialism, the right of a green social economy.

Finally: Challenge of our era: Is the contiguity of paradigms possible in order to face the challenge brought by the destruction of nature?

I hope this will give you an idea of my work and will motivate you to contact me to set up an interview on Skype.

Thanks a lot in advance for your time, and I hope to hear from you,

All the best,

Xavier

I have personaly being involve in bamboo since 2005. I tried to introduce bamboo, as building material,  in the french west indies (with the assistance of Bamboo Technologies).

In 2008 I submitted to the Sorbonne University, as  a PhD candidate, the following subject: The paradigms of Development Challenge by the environmental and ecological problematic (base on the bamboo space of opinions). I made a break of 2 years during this period. Academically, there are 6 years that I have been working on the subject. Personaly, I beleive much more.

Professionaly I am mainly working with international organizations in the area of humanitarian action and development. As a metaphor, I use to say that Spinoza was a glass polisher...

That been said,  I am confuse about your sentence  " help Bamboo and Society". But I will try to reply:

As a scientist I can't simply advocate for bamboo (Personaly, yes, of course).  What I can do, as a sociologist, is to understand and help other to understand why bamboo attract a certain number of actors (network) and who are these actors : there heterogeneity, their perceptions of Development (and/or Sustainable Development), their analysis concerning the role of bamboo as a green material, their involvement, or not, in Development; their prospective and added values).

How this can help?:  improving our approach of Development project using bamboo as resource. Help the developers to understand the ethnocentrism they are carrying in order to go over it in front of otherness; developing methodologies in human and social science for development project: qualitative approach, project cycle, management and evaluation.

Hope I could answer to your questions (for now).

Thanks and hope to talk to you soon,

Xavier

To give you an idea, and in order to be transparent,  the different axes explored of my research were divided in 3 sections in my thesis Phd dissertation. Here is a very brief presentation of the objects I studied :

1) Socio-historical: The origin of Development; the link between Development, Colonization and Productivism; the construction of the perception of nature within the creation of Development, the imagination of Development challenged by the ecology

2) Field study: Bamboo, from global to local space of opinion (the complexity of actors); Bamboo; Real bamboo and Symbolic bamboo; Bamboo, a representation of socio-economical heterogeneity; Bamboo and Developement(S): an oxymoron ; Bamboo and social economy (example of Martinique); the perception of bamboo from the diverity of areas.

3) Developement and the ecological challenge: From Development to Post-Development; Ideology and Utopia: their influence in our perceptions; global village and local village, the age of network; the eco-village as a choice for development ? ; the community as a choice of post-development and ecological action ? ; between green capitalism and green socialism, the right of a green social economy.

Finally: Challenge of our era: Is the contiguity of paradigms possible in order to face the challenge brought by the destruction of nature.

Hope this will give you an idea of my work and will motivate you for a meeting. Please accept my apology for my limited english expression.

The above can, of course, bring a lot of questions. I will not be able to answer to them by email (can take time), but I will be happy to discuss them on skype or face to face.

Thanks a lot in advance for your time, and I hope to hear from you,

All the best,

Xavier
