Re: [bamboo-plantations] Recent Flowering of Phyllostachys nigra NW Oregon Coast

Gigantis Bamboo plantation

I would like to add my thanks to Bill Hollenback, from my understanding this compilation from Betty is a very valuable contribution to the bamboo people of the world. I am interested in helping with your project, perhaps we can discuss this via email. I am happy to see Daphne posting in this bamboo forum, she has inspired me for a long time; with her work with bamboo and "pull-dogs".

(I do not know why the paragraph  formatting is like that in my first post)

There have been reports of P. nigra and P.nigra 'Megurochiku' flowering in the PNW for the past couple of years.

I am putting Betty's Flowering data on www.bambooweb.info for the ABS. If you have a login name on the bambooweb.info forum you can post flowering data. If you do not have a login you can register then enter the data.
To see the information do a search for a plant then click on MORE under More Info.
On that page you can show the flowering data if it has been entered. ex.http://www.bambooweb.info/BambooPlantDetail.php?BooID=444&units=I

There are over 180 pages of flowering records that still need to be entered from Betty's records so if anyone would like to help please contact me.

Subject: [bamboo-plantations] Recent Flowering of Phyllostachys nigra NW Oregon Coast

I would like to report that Phyllostachys nigra aka "Black Bamboo" is flowering
and losing its vitality, no new shoots this year; (location: on the NW coast of Oregon, US). I remember that Betty Shore of the ABS kept a remarkable listing of "Bamboo Flowering worldwide" 15-20 years ago, Does anyone here know if this list is being continued, or if anyone is keeping track of this strangely timed phenomenon?  I have not been active in the ABS for some time due to health issues -- but I do feel the calling -- I have several bamboo projects in the works now.

Every year I enjoy walking my dog Rio past several bamboo groves; one of them is Phyllostachys nigra or Black Bamboo. It has aggressively sent underground rhizomes into the property owners' lawn, which would develop into beautiful new shoots and culms every spring.

I was disappointed this year when no new shoots were to be seen anywhere in the grove.  Looking for the cause, I was dismayed to see that it had in fact gone fully into "flowering
". Has anyone seen Black Bamboo/
Phyllostachys nigra flowering

recently?

Thirty some years heretofore; I was saddened by the the flowering of one of the bamboo patches on my riverfront property on  the Oregon coast -- the bamboo, a Phyllostachys bambusoides (if I remember correctly. I know that the same species had flowered and died-off at the Japanese Garden in Portland, Oregon and many other locations as well.

I did take some digital pictures and videos with a tablet and a GroPro POV camera.
