Hello Ran,
Georgia's climate grows most of the Phyllostachys very well. The original USDA import station for bamboos is in Savannah, Georgia. The second USDA collection is located in Byron. Because the USDA planned to introduce bamboo to American farmers, many starts were given out. The farmers planted them. No industry arose. Most groves were torn out. Some remained on Granddad's old farm.
At this point there are several bamboo retail and wholesale nurseries and there is Big Bamboo which specializes in selling poles wild caught from groves scattered throughout the State and beyond.
I am harvesting shoots and poles from existing groves in Bonaire and Fort Valley. I have planted ten varieties on my twelve acres. This will be their second spring. You can see the results of five years of work at www.bamboofarmingusa.com.
I do not know of bamboo industry in Georgia yet. The Southeast Chapter of the American Bamboo Society has members in Georgia. I don't know how many. Perhaps twenty.
Yours in bamboo,
Daphne Lewis

What species grow there?
Any industry?
any bamboo people?
many thanks,
