Since it is Moso you bought then there is a reasonably good chance
that your seeds are in fact Moso because this is a species so widely
grown that there are always some groves in flowering somewhere and
they are always available through Chinese seed companies. I believe
this is true of D. strictus in India as well. It would be very
foolish of a seed dealer to ever supply substitutes for either of
these two species. Also, it should be easy enough to verify the
identity of your Moso seedlings. Young Moso culms, even those of
small plants, are covered in a soft layer of tiny hairs (pubescence)
that are white or silvery and very soft on young culms. This layer of
pubescence becomes more course as the culm matures and the hairs
harden. It can also wear off with age and the older culms become
smooth . I don't know of any other bamboo that has this feature.
The Phyllostachys genus is easy enough to distinguish as well. They
have two branches at the nodes, one larger than the other and a
groove in the culm below the branch complement.

I would be happy if my seeds are really what I bought (Moso) and
what they seem. Besides I'm skeptical incredulity as to the names of
bamboos and the IDs that I often have. In this case, Moso seeds,
which I got from Germany, I'm "almost certain" that they spoke the
truth. This seeds were planted in April 2007 and are already
sprouting in the third generation now, I can already compare the
shoots that are coming out with the other Phyllostachys I have in my
collection. I shoot pictures of P.nigra and P.nigra Henon and
P.bambusoides and the P.aurea. I received these(Moso), comparing the
photos of your buds are of different format with each other and are
similar to those of other Moso shoots I have seen on the web.
As for Dendrocalamus and other species have not yet experienced yet.
But I find interesting the following: If you are not looking for a
specific species (as is my case that I am a collector) any kind that
I have not in my collection that comes will be welcome, even if it is
wrong! But .. really its important to have credentials!
I agree in all respects with what Robert said that the ideal is to
get the plant alive, because it already carries with it the entire
history and its characteristics are visible, either clone or even
from seed. The time it takes to get a mature plant from a seed is
something almost daunting.
Roy, unfortunately on my visit to your collection, last June, had no
time to argue about the seeds. This is a subject I would like to talk
and to share some doubts as to you puts up. I also share an interest
in purchasing seed of other species that have security risk since
they will germinate. We can talk about this later.
Of the 120 seeds (Moso) that got about 60 germinated( 4 kinds of
substracts), approximately 30 of these could be transplanted to
larger pots and grown (1 year) and of these only 17 could lead to
ground. But a number of factors contributed to this failure,
including my inexperience with seeds and other weather problems,
topographic and soil here in Rio Grande do Sul state/ Brazil.
Today these plants are over 2 m height and putting 8 to 12 buds on
each plant to spread. I hope they are really Moso. As I said they
have all caracteristicst of Moso compared with the others
Phyllostachys related, but I need some years more to be absolutely
sure.

And what variety of bamboo do you have that grew from these 120
bamboos from Germany?
All the people I know who have brought bamboo seeds over the
Internet (and almost all from Germany) have bamboo seedling that look
like D.
strictus.
And even if you had a bamboo plant flower, say a black culmed
variety, the chances of the new seedling being black is about
99.99999 percent chance that it won¹t be black, but instead it would
be green and never turn black.
