Re[bamboo-plantations] Introduction

Gigantis Bamboo plantation Welcome to the group.
As you come from similar territory I hope this topic may also interest you and
the rest in the group, mainly the social scientist and agroforestry
silviculturist.

Bamboo thrive through socialisation with human from prehistory and so shall it
be particularly in this decade of bamboo rediscovery, into modern and high
technology application. Can bamboo also influence the social pattern, fabric and
the basic humanity particularly for tribal and upland societies who are still
poor and on subsistence livelihood. True to its straightness, flexcible in its
pliancy, quite in meekness yet hold mountain from landslide, great strength in
numbers to withstand greatest of any hurricane. Humanity need to look and learn
from bamboo.

What manner of social or people organisation needed to benifit from bamboo. More
than 2/3 world population are still rural and poor. Surely bamboo has a part to
play. Many communities are mobilised into community associations, land managers
and multipurpose coorperatives into community livelihood development projects.
Salute to Phillipines whom has such approach. What manner is the 'Bamboo living'
shall we inculcate. Large scale mixed agroforestry and bamboo permaculture
through renew social organisation is most urgently needed. Need to exchange
expertise in this area.

Hi Arthur,

Welcome to the bamboo plantation group!

Where in the Philippines do you live and where do you plan to establish your
bamboo plantation?

I am also from the Philippines and I work at PCARRD under its Forestry and
Environment Research Division. Bamboo and Rattan is one of the major commodities

of our division and we monitor and evaluate projects related to these
commodities. We have local publications  (like the Philippines Recommends for
Bamboo; Profitablity analysis for ornamental bamboo (specifically for Pole
bamboo) and for pole and shoot production (specifically for kawayan tinik ) that

are for sale at a reasonable price at PCARRD.  The content of these publications

are mostly derived from the completed Rsearch and Development projects conducted

locally on bamboo and rattan. Similarly, we have an ongoing E-learning course on

bamboo (entitled Growing bamboo for (Profit  and Healthy Environment) which was
developed by PCARRD and administered by the  Agricultural Training Institute of
the Department of Agriculture (ATI-DA). This is available online at the
e-learning site of ATI (www.e-extension.gov,ph/elearning).

I hope you'll be able to see/avail these publications. I'm sure this will help
you get started in your plan to go into bamboo plantation.....

Good luck and best wishes,

Nimfa
