RE: Re: [bamboo-plantations] bamboo from seeds

Gigantis Bamboo plantation Absolutely…as long as the seed source is reliable and the cultural practice with reliable seeds is logical. Seeds are obviously the most natural form of propagation. I'd never discourage their proper use.

I completely agree with Dr. Murli. Fresh seeds of bamboo are a boon as
they provide the complete life cycle of the species and also the
precious genetic variation.

This group has grown quite vast now and can play a very crucial role in
disseminating information over fresh flowerings and exchange of seeds
from trusted source.

Any comments?

difficult to believe that Bambusa ventricosa ( Syn. B. wamin) and
Bambusa

vulgaris could produce seeds. The photographs in the website in some
cases

are clearly mistakes.

Some of the species are known to flower at least sporadically. There
are

those with large number of cohorts spread over a large area where you
could

expect flowering and seeding over a long period of time in a few
populations

at a time. In India, Bambusa bambos (B. arundinacea) and Dendrocalamus

strictus are known to be in flower somewhere or the other every year
and

hence it is not surprising if the seeds are passed off as of some other

species by dishonest or ignorant sellers.

I am a bit dissapointed that use of seeds is being discouraged in this

thread. Availability of seeds should actually be seen as a blessing for
the

variability that it makes available. For larger plantations I would

encourage farmers to grow from seeds whenever they are available and
then

select the best clumps in a few years time for propagating
vegetatively. The

delay in vigorous growth in seedlings is only for the first 3-6 years

during which the rhizomes are consolidated after which the clumps will
grow

equally well regardless of whether they came from seeds or from
rhizomes.

Propagating vegetatively or through micorpropagation a single good
clone is

the worst form of monoculture and an invitation to diseases and pests.
