[bamboo-plantations] Re: New Discovery Channel show looking for photos of bamboo fruit/seeds

Gigantis Bamboo plantation I recall that in the early days of the internet, the bamboo email
group had reports of how farmers in southeast asia (Thailand?) were
encouraged to grow Dendrocalamus as part of a government program. The
bamboo was pretty much all clones ( maybe from Tissue Culture?), and it
flowered gregariously, with reports of the same sort of rat infestation
problem. I'm afraid that my memory isn't clear on the date, but I think
it was early 1990's or late 1980's.

Another similar event(also human caused) happened in China before World
War II where large amounts of bamboo was planted with the idea of
producing paper. In that report, many square miles of bamboo flowered
at the same time, producing not only rat issues but also erosion issues.

Lesson: when planting large area with bamboo it's best to imitate
nature and include diversity in the plan.
