Dear Cynthia, regarding the "famous" rat plague , I must disagree
when one says that it is produced by the flowering of the bamboo. -
It
will not necessarily increase significantly the population of rats by reason of
having more food if the ecosystem this in balance. -
This i can affirm
because for 7 years this is happening in Paraguay in different micro ecosystems,
the flowering of the species Guadua Chacoensis (takuaruzu)
Today we can see flowering that were completed this year.
In any case we haven`t see
the increase in the quantity of rats. -
we see the presence of
numerous flying birds, corral birds and monkeys that feed of the seeds (i have
homemade videos and pictures). - These seeds are present in the spikes in a
percentage that different among the 2 and until 10%. -
The hypothesis
of the non proliferation of the rats in Paraguay is that has stayed the
ecological balance and other species are taken charge of the control, as
rapacious birds and snakes that habitates these places. -
A
good serious observation would be to verify if in the places where are observed
"rat plague", the ecosystems are diminished in their diversity soon after
monoculture, prunings, or pesticides use. -
Who work with organic
cultivations, we very frequently see this operation of the systems. -
Although the origin of the rat plague appears like a truth in some place
of the planet, in this place is not proven.

Hi everyone,
I'm working on a new show for Discovery Channel about rodents called Animals of Unusual
Size. We have a segment that discusses rat plagues in Asia caused by the flowering (or
fruiting?) of bamboo. Does anyone here have photos or video footage of these plants? We
