Regarding introduction of bamboo species into Mozambique for developing building material, as well as furniture and small house and kitchen utilities, I suggest to try only tropical species of Bambusa, Dendrocalamus and Gigantochloa from Asia and Guadua angustifolia and G. chacoensis from Southamerica. It is useless to grow temperate species of Phyllostachys or even more cold adapted genera.
Mozambique lies between 11 and 27º S, also most in the tropical thermal belt and has a concentrated pattern of rainfall, with areas as low as 375 mm, 500 to 700 mm, and 1000 to 1500 annual rainfall. I strongly recommend only this latter area to develop a reasonable growth and yield for bamboo wood and even erosion control. Tropical species can withstand little frost down to minus 3º C.
Remember that all bamboo that are not suitable as healthy wood like trash from manufacturing or overmature culms, can be transformed into charcoal.
Please, forget about medicinal or food uses. Bamboos are not a panacea or all-heal resources. Medicines shall rely only on molecules with specific biological activity. Bamboo shoots only provide fiber and their yield pro surface unit is much less than conventional crops, but these can provide substantial amounts of carbohydrates, protein and fat for a poor and hungry society. Even more, to establish a bamboo groove from seeds, by means of rhizomes, clump division or culm sections takes no less than 8-10 years. Later on, not all the yearly growth can be harvested, since much of it shall remain untouched for further photosynthesis. Please, take into account that some bamboo species flower every 30 years following complete death of the groove, with in turn means lack of resource for some years.
I remain open too more questions. Cheers, Roberto
