Stepahanie, even when a bamboo node cutting (stick) looks well and truly dead, leave it where it is for longer if you can. It is really frustrating when you pull out your 'dead' sticks only to find small shoots and/or roots emerging. In my experience these weak plants, which may have continued to grow if left undisturbed, often die when replanted regardless of how much you molly-coddle them the second time around.Regarding the Bambusa lako, resist the urge to check for roots. I suggest you wait until you see roots emerge from their container or until shoots develop into canes.
Also, be mindful that Oct to early Dec is not a long time in terms of bamboo propagation. I have had some cuttings (B.ventricosa, B.balcooa) finally strike after one year in propagating medium but most tend to rot well inside that period. Keep in mind that even a lowly 5% success rate for cuttings may be cause for great celebration with some recalcitrant species, and even batches of some of the 'easy' to propagate species may fail for no apparent reason.
This variability, and the continuing challenge to learn the secrets of the enigmatic bamboo plant, is what keeps many of us keen.
